Description
The Royal Leicestershire Regiment, one of the oldest infantry regiments in the British Army, served with distinction throughout the Second World War. At the outbreak of war in 1939, the regiment fielded several battalions, each deployed to different theaters across the globe. Its wartime service was defined by geographic breadth and operational diversity, spanning Europe, North Africa, and Asia. The 1st Battalion began the war in India and later moved to Burma, where it became part of the British Fourteenth Army. There, it engaged in prolonged jungle warfare against Japanese forces during the critical campaigns of 1943–45. It played a central role in the Allied counteroffensive that drove Japanese forces out of northern Burma and contributed to the eventual reconquest of the country. The 2nd Battalion, meanwhile, saw action in the early stages of the war as part of the British Expeditionary Force in France. It fought in the defensive battles of May 1940 and was among the units evacuated from Dunkirk. After its return to Britain, it underwent reorganization and training before being sent to North Africa, where it fought in Tunisia during the final stages of the campaign in 1943. From there, it took part in the Allied invasion of Italy, engaging in heavy combat as part of the slow and costly advance up the peninsula. In addition to its regular battalions, the regiment also raised Territorial and service battalions that served in garrison, training, and support roles in various parts of the British Empire. The regiment’s wartime contributions were marked by difficult conditions—jungle, desert, and mountain warfare—and by persistent combat in extended campaigns far from home. By war’s end, the Royal Leicestershire Regiment had served in multiple theaters under varied and often challenging conditions, building upon a longstanding reputation for reliability, discipline, and combat effectiveness. Its contributions during World War II formed a significant chapter in its long regimental history.
