Description
This is an original WW2-era brass cap badge of the East Lancashire Regiment, featuring the regiment’s iconic sphinx and "EGYPT" tablet above the Tudor rose, encircled by a laurel wreath and surmounted by the King’s Crown. The sphinx motif commemorates the regiment’s distinguished service in the Egyptian Campaign of 1801, for which the “EGYPT” battle honour was awarded. The laurel wreath and rose signify regimental pride and its deep ties to the historic county of Lancashire. The East Lancashire Regiment was formed in 1881 by the amalgamation of the 30th (Cambridgeshire) Regiment of Foot and the 59th (2nd Nottinghamshire) Regiment of Foot. In WW2, the regiment saw extensive service across multiple theatres. Battalions fought in the early stages of the war during the Norwegian Campaign and the Dunkirk evacuation, while others served in North Africa, where they endured the harsh fighting of the Western Desert against Axis forces. The regiment later took part in the Italian Campaign, including the arduous battles at Monte Cassino, and was also involved in operations in Northwest Europe following D-Day, contributing to the liberation of occupied territories and the final push into Germany. This example retains its original lugs for attachment, showing period wear consistent with wartime use. Badges of this type were worn on the service dress cap and field service cap, serving both as a mark of regimental identity and a source of esprit de corps for soldiers in some of the war’s most challenging campaigns.
