Description
This is an original Soviet SSh-40 steel combat helmet, recovered from the historic Kurland battlefield in Latvia—one of the most bitterly contested and strategically significant fronts of the Second World War. Unearthed from the soil of the Kurland Pocket, this helmet bears the scars of history, retaining remnants of its wartime paint beneath layers of oxidation, earth, and the patina of over 75 years underground. Each example is unique, showing honest ground-dug condition consistent with battlefield recovery.

The Kurland Pocket (also known as the Courland Pocket) was the site of six major battles between October 1944 and May 1945, pitting Soviet forces of the 1st and 2nd Baltic Fronts against the remnants of Germany’s Army Group North, which had been isolated in the Latvian peninsula by the Red Army's sweeping advance through the Baltics. Trapped and encircled, over 200,000 German troops—including Waffen-SS divisions, Heer infantry, and Luftwaffe field units—were ordered by Hitler to hold the position at all costs.

Soviet forces launched repeated offensives against the entrenched German defenders, resulting in some of the most grueling, attritional fighting of the Eastern Front. The Red Army sustained heavy casualties in brutal assaults across dense forests, swamps, and fortified lines. The SSh-40 helmet, introduced in 1940 and worn by countless Soviet infantrymen during the war, became a common sight in the Kurland campaign, offering basic protection against shrapnel in a theater dominated by artillery and trench warfare.

These battlefield-dug helmets are not simply artifacts—they are silent witnesses to the final convulsions of the Eastern Front. The region around Kurland became a graveyard for thousands of soldiers on both sides. Despite the collapse of Berlin in May 1945, Army Group Kurland did not surrender until May 8, holding out until the very last day of the war in Europe. Many Soviet soldiers who fell during the fighting were never recovered, and countless helmets like this one remained buried for decades, rediscovered only recently by licensed recovery teams and battlefield archaeologists.

Whether for display, preservation, or historical study, these relics offer a powerful connection to the human experience of war—objects lost in the chaos of battle and rediscovered generations later as fragments of memory and sacrifice. Each helmet is a genuine piece of Eastern Front history, unearthed from one of World War II’s bloodiest and most forgotten campaigns.
