Russian Federation Jubilee Medal “50 Years of Victory in the Great Patriotic War 1941–1945” (Юбилейная медаль «50 лет Победы в Великой Отечественной войне 1941–1945 гг.»)

This officially issued commemorative medal was created by the Russian Federation in 1995 to mark the 50th anniversary of the Soviet Union’s victory over German forces in what is known in Russia as the Great Patriotic War (Великая Отечественная война)—the Eastern Front of World War II. Titled Юбилейная медаль «50 лет Победы в Великой Отечественной войне 1941–1945 гг.», it was awarded to surviving veterans of the Red Army, Soviet Navy, partisan units, and to civilians recognized for extraordinary labor or resistance efforts during the war.

The obverse of the medal bears a detailed five-pointed star and laurel wreath with the inscription “50 лет Победы в Великой Отечественной войне 1941–1945 гг.” encircling the emblem. The reverse features the official anniversary year “1945–1995,” with a hammer and sickle above and crossed branches below.

Mounted on the proper pentagonal suspension with a ribbon that incorporates both the Russian tricolor and the historic black-and-orange Ribbon of Saint George—an enduring symbol of wartime valor—this medal reflects both continuity with Soviet memory and the post-Soviet Russian Federation’s efforts to honor its wartime legacy.
