East German Helfer der Volkspolizei Armband (Armbinde “Helfer der VP”)

This is an original East German armband worn by civilian auxiliaries of the Volkspolizei (People’s Police), officially designated Helfer der Volkspolizei. Constructed of a bright blue cotton band with black printed text, it bears the title “Helfer der Volkspolizei” in a bold typeface, signifying the wearer’s role as a police auxiliary. This example is representative of the standardized issue used from the early 1950s through the 1980s in the German Democratic Republic (GDR).

The Helfer der Volkspolizei program was established shortly after the formation of the GDR in 1949. These auxiliaries—often drawn from politically reliable citizens, members of the Freie Deutsche Jugend (FDJ), or Communist Party affiliates—supported the Volkspolizei in maintaining public order, surveilling anti-social behavior, and enforcing state directives. Their duties included traffic regulation, assistance during festivals and emergencies, neighborhood patrols, and reporting politically suspicious activities. Although they had no formal police training or rank, they operated with state backing and were expected to display loyalty to the socialist order.
