Known officially as an “Airborne background trimming,” this oval was authorized beginning in 1950 for wear behind airborne qualification badges, signifying the wearer’s unit of assignment while on jump status. The parachutist badge, often called “jump wings,” was first created in 1941 and remains the foundational symbol of airborne qualification in the U.S. Army. To earn this badge, soldiers must complete the Basic Airborne Course, a rigorous three-week program that culminates in five qualifying jumps from aircraft in flight. This particular example is the standard U.S. Army Basic Parachutist Badge, signifying successful completion of the course and airborne qualification. The attached oval features a deep blue field with a bright yellow border, the official colors of the 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment. The 504th earned distinction during WW2 in operations including Sicily, Salerno, Anzio, and Operation Market Garden. After the war, the unit remained an essential part of America’s rapid deployment capability through the Cold War and beyond. The badge is a postwar production, unmarked on the reverse, with a clutch back fastener system rather than the earlier pin-back style.
