Description
This original World War II paratrooper’s Ike jacket is a rare and compelling piece of airborne history, worn by a member of the 11th Airborne Division during the final stages of the Pacific campaign. The jacket is a regulation “Jacket, Field, Wool, O.D., Officers’” pattern, dated November 1, 1944, and carries a depot tag indicating production on April 21, 1945. It’s a size 36 Long, with full satin lining and period-correct button tab closure at the waist. This is a true wartime piece, not a postwar reissue. What sets this example apart is the insignia. The left chest displays a full-size sterling silver paratrooper badge mounted through a classic two-tone oval—red center with sky blue border—typical of theater-made jump oval backings used in the Pacific. The oval shows field wear and original stitching, and the wings are marked “STERLING” on the reverse. These cloth ovals were handmade overseas and issued within the division, making each one unique. They were worn behind the badge to identify the unit of assignment at the time of qualification. On the left shoulder is a wartime 11th Airborne Division patch with the “AIRBORNE” tab above. This division saw heavy action in the Pacific Theater and holds the distinction of executing the only combat parachute assault of the war in that theater—dropping onto Tagaytay Ridge in Luzon in February 1945. The 11th played a central role in the liberation of Manila and was the first full American division to enter Japan for occupation duty, landing in Yokohama in August 1945. The jacket also includes brass “U.S.” and crossed rifles collar discs, a single overseas service stripe, and corporal chevrons on each sleeve. The label inside the lining reads “Regulation Army Officer’s Jacket,” and all insignia appear original to the piece. The back of the paratrooper badge shows field use and toning consistent with age. This is a well-preserved, completely original uniform with strong historical presence. Genuine 11th Airborne paratrooper jackets—especially with authentic jump wings and Pacific-made ovals—are far harder to come by than their European counterparts. A superb example of a combat-worn jacket tied directly to a unique and often overlooked chapter of airborne operations in World War II.
