Gilt bars on each shoulder mark the officer’s rank.

Pinned above the left breast pocket is a ribbon bar consisting of the Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal, and the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal adorned with five bronze campaign stars—indicating participation in five separate campaigns within that theater. This suggests service across multiple major operations, likely encompassing North Africa, Sicily, Italy, France, or Germany. Medical and Dental Corps officers frequently served in mobile surgical hospitals, evacuation stations, and field units close to combat zones, where they provided critical care under fire and endured the same operational hazards as combat troops.
