Description
This original World War II-era U.S. Army Ike jacket is badged with the distinctive blue-and-white shoulder sleeve insignia of the VI Corps, a major field formation that saw extensive service across the Mediterranean and European Theaters. The jacket is regulation OD wool with a four-pocket design and retains clear interior markings indicating a size of 38 Regular. There is no visible laundry number or name, but the garment remains in excellent condition overall, showing sharp tailoring and period wear consistent with wartime use. Activated in January 1940, VI Corps played a critical role in multiple campaigns throughout World War II. After initial garrison duties in the continental United States, VI Corps was deployed to North Africa in early 1943 and later spearheaded the Allied landings at Salerno, Italy, in September of that year as part of Operation Avalanche. Under the command of General Lucian K. Truscott and later General Edward H. Brooks, the corps fought through the rugged Apennine Mountains and participated in the brutal assault on the Gustav Line, including operations near Monte Cassino. Perhaps its most pivotal action came in August 1944, when VI Corps formed the main assault element of Operation Dragoon, the Allied invasion of southern France. The corps rapidly advanced up the Rhône Valley, liberating major cities and linking up with forces moving east from Normandy. VI Corps then pushed into Alsace and the Rhineland, helping to breach Germany’s southern defenses and advance into Bavaria by war’s end. This jacket is a tangible piece of that hard-fought legacy—representing a corps that conducted multiple amphibious landings, mountain warfare, and the final push into Nazi Germany. A superb example of a combat service jacket from one of the most active American corps commands of the Second World War.
