Description
The 96th Infantry Division, known as the "Deadeyes," was activated at Camp Adair, Oregon, in August 1942. After extensive training on the U.S. mainland and in Hawaii, the division entered combat in the Pacific Theater and played a decisive role in two of the war’s most brutal campaigns: Leyte and Okinawa. The division’s first major operation came during the Leyte Campaign in the Philippines. Landing on the eastern shore of Leyte in October 1944, the 96th was tasked with supporting the push toward the island’s mountainous interior. Facing fanatical Japanese resistance, monsoon rains, and dense jungle terrain, the Deadeyes advanced steadily, helping secure key towns such as Tabontabon and Dagami. Their actions contributed significantly to the overall success of General MacArthur’s campaign to liberate the Philippines. The 96th Infantry Division’s most grueling test came during the Battle of Okinawa, which began on April 1, 1945—Easter Sunday and April Fool’s Day. As part of the XXIV Corps of the U.S. Tenth Army, the 96th landed on the western beaches of Okinawa alongside the 7th Infantry Division. Initially encountering light resistance, the division soon became locked in savage combat against deeply entrenched Japanese defenders along the Kakazu Ridge and Conical Hilldefensive line. These positions were part of the notorious Shuri Line, where Japanese forces had created an elaborate system of tunnels, bunkers, and reverse-slope defenses. The 96th earned a fearsome reputation for tenacity under fire. The division employed flamethrowers, demolitions, and close-quarters infantry tactics in grueling day-after-day assaults. By the time it reached Yonabaru, the division had suffered over 7,000 casualties, including more than 1,400 killed in action. Their sacrifices helped break the back of Japanese resistance on Okinawa, paving the way for the eventual capture of the island in June 1945. With Okinawa secured, the 96th was slated to take part in the planned invasion of the Japanese Home Islands—Operation Downfall—before the war ended following the atomic bombings. Instead, the division was assigned to occupation duty on Mindoro Island in the Philippines, where it remained until deactivation in early 1946. The 96th Infantry Division earned distinction for its combat effectiveness and valor. It was awarded two Presidential Unit Citations and produced two Medal of Honor recipients. The division’s nickname, “Deadeyes,” was a reference to its marksmanship proficiency and battlefield prowess—a reputation earned in some of the most brutal fighting of the Pacific War.
