Description
The 66th Infantry Division of the United States Army was activated on April 15, 1943, at Camp Blanding, Florida, and trained extensively in the United States before deploying to the European Theater in late 1944. Known as the "Black Panther Division" for its distinctive shoulder insignia, the unit’s wartime service was centered primarily around containment operations in western France rather than front-line combat on the major axes of Allied advance. The division embarked for Europe in December 1944, but its arrival was marked by tragedy. On Christmas Eve, while crossing the English Channel aboard the Belgian transport ship SS Léopoldville, a German U-boat torpedoed the vessel just off the coast of Cherbourg. Over 750 American soldiers from the 66th were killed in one of the deadliest maritime disasters involving U.S. ground forces during the war. Despite the loss, the division continued to deploy and assume operational duties in France. In early 1945, the 66th Infantry Division relieved elements of the 94th Infantry Division in the Lorient and Saint-Nazaire sectors along the French Atlantic coast. There, it was tasked with containing large pockets of German forces who had been bypassed during the rapid Allied advance across France. From January through May 1945, the division conducted a sustained siege of these isolated German garrisons, engaging in patrols, artillery bombardments, and limited offensive actions to suppress breakout attempts and enforce surrender terms. The division did not participate in major offensive operations beyond its assigned coastal containment role but was instrumental in preventing the reactivation of German forces along the western flank. Following Germany’s surrender in May 1945, the 66th assumed occupation duties before returning to the United States. It was inactivated in October 1945. Though its combat experience was geographically confined, the 66th Infantry Division played a crucial role in securing Allied rear areas and neutralizing persistent enemy concentrations along the Atlantic coast. The tragedy of the Léopoldville remains a central part of the division’s legacy and a solemn reminder of the human cost of deployment during wartime.
