Historical Background:

Activated on October 1, 1941 at Fort Knox, Kentucky, the 5th Armored Division—nicknamed the "Victory Division"—was part of the massive mobilization effort preceding America’s full entry into World War II. After extensive stateside training, the division deployed to Europe in 1944 as part of General George S. Patton’s Third Army.

The 5th Armored first saw combat in August 1944 during the breakout from Normandy. They distinguished themselves in the Falaise Gap, helping to close the encirclement of German forces fleeing east. From there, the division spearheaded the Allied drive across France, moving with astonishing speed and earning a reputation for rapid, deep penetrations behind enemy lines.

They were among the first Allied units to enter Luxembourg and Western Germany, participating in the liberation of Luxembourg City and capturing the key city of Trier in March 1945. Unlike many other armored divisions, the 5th was also among the first US units to cross the Elbe River, reaching within 45 miles of Berlin before being ordered to halt.

By V-E Day, the division had fought across France, Belgium, Luxembourg, and Germany, earning campaign credit for Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes-Alsace, and Central Europe.
