Description

Activated at Camp Claiborne, Louisiana, in November 1942, the 103rd Infantry Division—nicknamed the “Cactus Division” after its shoulder sleeve insignia—was composed primarily of draftees and reservists. After extensive stateside training, the division deployed to the European Theater in late 1944, entering combat relatively late in the war but playing a crucial role in the final campaigns against Nazi Germany. The 103rd arrived in Marseille, France, in October 1944 and moved swiftly into action as part of the Seventh Army under the 6th Army Group. Its first combat operations began in mid-November 1944, as it advanced into the Vosges Mountains. The division faced harsh winter weather, entrenched German defenses, and difficult terrain during the Vosges Campaign, but successfully captured towns such as Saint-Dié-des-Vosges, a strategic German communications hub. The 103rd’s performance in these early engagements established its reputation for tenacity and effective mountain warfare. As the offensive moved eastward, the division pushed into the Alsace region, securing ground during the bitter winter fighting and fending off German counterattacks during Operation Nordwind, the last major German offensive on the Western Front in January 1945. After successfully holding its sector, the 103rd resumed its advance into Germany. In March 1945, the Cactus Division crossed the Rhine and advanced rapidly through southern Germany. It liberated towns including Stuttgart and progressed through Bavaria and into the Tyrol region of western Austria. In early May 1945, the division reached Innsbruck and connected with the Fifth U.S. Army advancing north from Italy, helping to establish one of the first direct links between the Western and Italian fronts. The 103rd was also involved in liberating several subcamps of the Dachau concentration camp network in Bavaria during this final push. By the war’s end, the 103rd Infantry Division had fought in the Rhineland and Central Europe campaigns, capturing more than 35,000 prisoners and advancing over 900 miles. Though a latecomer to the battlefield, the division played a significant role in the collapse of German resistance and the final Allied victory in Europe.
