Description
The 187th Airborne Infantry Regiment was activated in February 1943 at Camp Mackall, North Carolina, as part of the 11th Airborne Division. During World War II, the regiment trained extensively for airborne operations but was not committed to combat in Europe. Instead, it deployed to the Pacific Theater, landing in New Guinea in late 1944 and then participating in the Luzon campaign in early 1945. The 187th executed combat jumps during the liberation of the Philippines, notably during the assault on Tagaytay Ridge and in operations south of Manila. In June 1945, it took part in the airborne landing at Aparri in northern Luzon to cut off retreating Japanese forces. After Japan’s surrender, the 187th was part of the initial American occupation force in Honshu. Following World War II, the regiment was inactivated, then reactivated and reorganized as the 187th Airborne Regimental Combat Team (ARCT) in 1949 amid rising global tensions. When war broke out in Korea in 1950, the 187th was quickly deployed and became the only major U.S. airborne unit to conduct combat parachute assaults during the conflict. The regiment executed two combat jumps—at Sukchon in October 1950 to cut off retreating North Korean forces, and at Munsan-ni in March 1951 during Operation Tomahawk to reinforce UN positions north of Seoul. Throughout the Korean War, the 187th ARCT served as a highly mobile, elite force, conducting rapid air assaults, holding key terrain, and countering enemy offensives across the central and western fronts. Its aggressiveness and tactical flexibility earned it a formidable reputation, and the unit was repeatedly cited for valor and performance in combat. The 187th's service in two wars, marked by airborne operations and close combat, placed it among the most distinguished airborne units of its era. Its legacy of rapid deployment and battlefield effectiveness continued into the Cold War and beyond.
