Description
The 57th Infantry Regiment was one of the premier combat units of the Philippine Scouts, a force composed primarily of Filipino enlisted men under the command of American officers. Formed in 1917, the 57th became part of the U.S. Army’s Philippine Department and was stationed in Luzon as tensions with Japan escalated in the late 1930s. When war broke out in the Pacific following the attack on Pearl Harbor, the 57th was assigned to the U.S. Army’s Philippine Division under Major General Jonathan Wainwright. In December 1941, Japanese forces invaded Luzon, and the 57th was quickly engaged in delaying actions along the island’s central plains. The regiment fought a series of rearguard engagements during the American and Filipino withdrawal to the Bataan Peninsula. Once on Bataan, the 57th manned critical sectors of the defensive line and distinguished itself in fierce fighting throughout January and February 1942, particularly during the battles along Trail 2 and in defense of the Abucay and Orion-Bagac lines. Despite being under-equipped and cut off from resupply, the 57th held its ground against superior Japanese forces. By April 1942, after months of siege, starvation, and disease, the defenders of Bataan were forced to surrender. Members of the 57th Infantry Regiment became part of the infamous Bataan Death March, during which thousands of Filipino and American soldiers perished. Survivors were held in Japanese prison camps for the remainder of the war under brutal conditions. The 57th Infantry Regiment earned lasting recognition for its determined stand against overwhelming odds and its role in delaying the Japanese timetable in the Pacific. Its service on Bataan remains one of the defining examples of resistance and sacrifice in U.S. Army and Philippine military history.
