The 34th Infantry Division, known as the “Red Bull Division,” was one of the first U.S. Army divisions deployed to the European Theater in the Second World War. Composed primarily of National Guard units from the Midwest—especially Iowa, Minnesota, and the Dakotas—it was federalized in 1941 and sent overseas shortly after the attack on Pearl Harbor. It holds the distinction of being the first U.S. division to land in Europe during the war, arriving in Northern Ireland in early 1942 for training under British command. The division first saw combat in North Africa as part of Operation Torch, landing in Algeria in November 1942. From there, it fought in a series of major engagements across Tunisia in early 1943, including at Kasserine Pass and Hill 609, where it faced experienced German and Italian forces. The Red Bull Division played a critical role in the final defeat of Axis forces in North Africa in May 1943. Later that year, the 34th took part in the Allied invasion of Italy. It fought continuously up the Italian peninsula for nearly two years, distinguishing itself in the Naples-Foggia campaign, the brutal fighting at Monte Cassino, the advance through the Gustav and Gothic Lines, and the final push through the Po Valley in 1945. The division endured some of the heaviest and most prolonged combat of any American unit in Europe, with more days in frontline action than any other U.S. division during the war. By the end of the conflict, the 34th Infantry Division had earned a reputation for tenacity, adaptability, and effectiveness in mountain and urban warfare. Its red steer skull insignia—representing strength and endurance—became a symbol of its hard-fought service in some of the most difficult campaigns of the European Theater.
