Description

This is an original example of the iconic World War I-era M1910 dismounted cartridge belt, manufactured by the R.H. Long Company and clearly dated 6-18 (June 1918). Designed to carry ten five-round stripper clips for the M1903 Springfield rifle or M1917 Enfield, the M1910 belt was standard-issue equipment for American infantrymen during the Great War. The belt is constructed from durable tan woven cotton webbing using the Mills patent horizontal weave, with ten individual pouches, each secured with lift-the-dot fasteners.

This example is clearly marked “LONG 6-18” on the inside of the belt along with remnants of the manufacturer’s ink stamp. It features both brass and steel grommets and blackened brass snaps. The fabric shows moderate period wear and field use, with fraying and edge loss consistent with trench conditions and long-term storage, but all snaps remain intact and functional. The color remains a rich khaki with some staining and patina that speak to its authenticity.

The M1910 belt was a vital part of the U.S. soldier’s loadout in France during the final offensives of 1918, including the Meuse-Argonne and Saint-Mihiel campaigns. Issued in mass by the U.S. Army’s Quartermaster Corps, belts like this were worn by Doughboys of the American Expeditionary Forces (AEF) serving under General John J. Pershing. This specific example, dated mid-1918, may well have been issued to troops in one of the final major offensives on the Western Front.

A classic piece of WWI field gear, this R.H. Long 1918 belt is a highly collectible artifact and an authentic representation of the American soldier’s kit in the First World War.
