Description

This WW1-era postcard features the insignia of the 90th Infantry Division, known as the “Tough ‘Ombres,” a unit formed in 1917 with soldiers primarily from Texas and Oklahoma. The design incorporates the division’s distinctive “T-O” emblem, which symbolizes its regional roots. The artwork depicts a cowboy and a Native American, reflecting the cultural heritage of the soldiers who made up the division. This imagery ties into the division’s history, as many of its men hailed from frontier backgrounds, bringing with them a rugged and determined spirit.

The 90th Infantry Division was activated on August 25, 1917, at Camp Travis, Texas, as part of the National Army created for service in the American Expeditionary Forces (AEF) during World War I. Under the command of Major General Henry T. Allen, the division was deployed to France in June 1918, where it trained under the experienced guidance of the French Army. The division first saw combat in the St. Mihiel Offensive (September 12–15, 1918), where it played a critical role in the rapid American advance, successfully breaking through German lines and liberating key positions held since 1914.

Following St. Mihiel, the 90th Division was reassigned to participate in the Meuse-Argonne Offensive (September 26–November 11, 1918), the largest battle fought by American forces in World War I. The division faced fierce resistance in the rugged terrain of the Argonne Forest, enduring heavy casualties while pushing the Germans back. Despite grueling conditions, the 90th Division’s relentless assault contributed to the final Allied victories that led to the Armistice on November 11, 1918.

The division’s wartime service earned it a reputation for toughness and resilience, qualities that later defined its nickname, the “Tough ‘Ombres.” The division remained in Germany as part of the occupation force before returning to the United States in 1919. It was later reactivated for service in World War II, where it continued its legacy in the European Theater.

This postcard, likely produced as a commemorative item, showcases the division’s proud heritage and significant contributions to the war effort. The reverse side features a standard postcard layout with designated spaces for an address and message. The piece is in well-preserved condition, with only minor signs of wear consistent with age. A fine addition for collectors of WW1 militaria or those interested in the history of the 90th Infantry Division.
