Description
WW1 German Iron Cross 2nd Class – Eisernes Kreuz 2. Klasse 1914 This is an original Imperial German Eisernes Kreuz 2. Klasse (Iron Cross 2nd Class), awarded for bravery or leadership in the field during the First World War. Instituted by Kaiser Wilhelm II on August 5, 1914, the 1914 version of the Iron Cross revived the tradition of the decoration first established in 1813 during the Napoleonic Wars. This version retained the same cross pattée shape and blackened iron core with a silver frame, symbolizing both austerity and honor in Prussian military tradition. The obverse of the cross bears the royal cipher “W” for Kaiser Wilhelm II, the Prussian crown above it, and the date “1914” at the bottom, marking the year of its reinstitution. The reverse displays the oak leaves of valor and the royal cipher “FW” for Friedrich Wilhelm III—founder of the original Iron Cross in 1813—alongside the date “1813” to commemorate its origin. The Iron Cross 2nd Class was typically worn suspended from a black and white ribbon, representing the colors of the Kingdom of Prussia. This example retains its full-length original ribbon, folded in the parade mount style commonly seen on veteran-worn decorations. Unlike many military awards that recognized long service or specific campaigns, the Eisernes Kreuz was awarded purely for individual acts of bravery, regardless of rank or time in service. It could be awarded to both officers and enlisted men and became one of the most recognizable decorations in German military history. More than five million Iron Crosses 2nd Class were awarded during WW1, making it one of the most widely distributed Imperial German combat awards—but original examples in this condition, especially with intact ribbons, remain desirable to collectors and historians alike.
