The helmet features a black felt-covered hard shell adorned with ornate gilt brass fittings. The eagle insignia on the front prominently displays the numeral “5,” denoting the 5th Cavalry Regiment, surrounded by detailed oak leaf and acorn designs. A vivid golden-orange plume flows from a rosette holder at the crown, adding a striking visual element to the piece.

The interior is lined with supple leather and bears the stamped maker’s mark: “W.H. Horstmann Co., Philadelphia,” a renowned outfitter for military accouterments. The interior also features a vented gilt brass cap badge and intact leather sweatband.
