Description

This is a matching set of Indian Wars Era US Army Model 1880 1st Infantry Lieutenant’s Formal Dress Shoulder Knots. These shoulder knots were worn on full dress uniforms by lieutenants in the 1st Infantry Regiment. The intricate gold bullion braid is in excellent condition, with intertwined cord patterns leading to an oval-shaped rank insignia featuring the regimental number “1” in black on a white velvet background.

The reverse of each knot is backed in black felt and features the maker’s mark:
“H.E. McElvcy & Co., Columbus, Ohio.” This firm was a well-known supplier of military dress accouterments during the late 19th century.

The buttons securing the knots bear the Great Seal of the United States, indicative of late 19th-century issue. The fastening hardware on the reverse is intact and functional.

Condition:

  • The gold braid remains tightly woven with minor tarnishing from age.
  • The white velvet oval exhibits some wear and discoloration.
  • Backing felt has minor signs of use.
  • Maker’s mark is clearly visible.
  • Overall, these knots remain in excellent condition for their age.

Historical Context:

The Model 1880 Shoulder Knots were part of the elaborate full-dress uniform worn by US Army officers during the Indian Wars period. Unlike epaulettes, these knots were a formal yet less cumbersome alternative, secured with brass fixtures. The 1st Infantry Regiment was one of the oldest and most distinguished units in the US Army, participating in numerous campaigns across the Western frontier.
