This is an original World War II tropical rank chevron for a Rottenführer in the Waffen-SS, machine-embroidered in golden-yellow thread on a black wool base. This distinctive V-shaped insignia features two stacked stripes and was worn on the upper left sleeve of tropical or summer-weight uniforms, particularly in Mediterranean and southern theaters of operation.

The rank of Rottenführer—translating to “Section Leader”—was a junior NCO-equivalent grade in the Waffen-SS, above Sturmmann and roughly corresponding to a corporal in other military systems. The rank was introduced in 1934 and denoted a soldier responsible for leading a small unit or fire team, usually 5–7 men.

This chevron was part of the specialized tropical uniform ensemble issued to Waffen-SS units serving in warmer climates, including the Balkans, Italy, and North Africa. Such uniforms were lighter in material and color than standard wool service dress and were worn by units like the 13th Waffen Mountain Division of the SS “Handschar,” the 21st Waffen Mountain Division “Skanderbeg,” and other foreign volunteer or anti-partisan formations.

The present example remains in excellent condition with no damage or repairs. The embroidery is tight and vibrant, retaining the full contrast against the backing wool. These tropical insignia are considerably scarcer than standard versions due to limited issuance and harsher field conditions that reduced survival rates.
