Description
This is an original 1935 “Tag der Arbeit” (Day of Labor) tinnie, issued for the nationwide German Labor Day celebration held on May 1st, 1935. Struck in stamped aluminum, the badge features classical imagery symbolizing industrial labor and agriculture—a worker wielding a hammer, a farmer with a sheaf of grain, and an eagle clutching a swastika in its talons, framed above the year “1935” and the phrase “Tag der Arbeit.” The reverse retains its original vertical pin for wear. Following Adolf Hitler’s rise to power, May 1st was declared an official holiday in 1933, rebranded as the “Day of National Labor” to promote unity between German workers and the Nazi state. These tinnies were distributed during massive parades, speeches, and orchestrated public festivities coordinated by the German Labor Front (Deutsche Arbeitsfront, or DAF), which had replaced all independent labor unions after their dissolution. The 1935 issue represents the third year of these annual commemoratives, with each design varying by year and often distributed in the thousands to attendees. Despite their mass production, surviving examples in good condition—especially with intact pins and crisp detail—are highly collectible today, offering a tangible piece of the early propaganda and mass mobilization efforts of the Nazi regime leading into the Second World War. This example is a historically significant relic from the pre-war Nazi period and a key piece for any collector focused on Third Reich-era tinnies, propaganda, or labor-related militaria.
