Following Adolf Hitler’s rise to power, May 1st was declared an official holiday in 1933, rebranded as the “Day of National Labor” to promote unity between German workers and the Nazi state. These tinnies were distributed during massive parades, speeches, and orchestrated public festivities coordinated by the German Labor Front (Deutsche Arbeitsfront, or DAF), which had replaced all independent labor unions after their dissolution.

The 1935 issue represents the third year of these annual commemoratives, with each design varying by year and often distributed in the thousands to attendees.
