Description

WW2 German Luftwaffe Soldbuch Fragment Named to Emil Sammet, Issued 1940

This is a scarce surviving fragment of a Luftwaffe Soldbuch (Soldier’s Pay & Identity Book) belonging to Emil Sammet, a carpenter (Tischler) by trade, born 18 April 1901 in what appears to be the town of Hirschau, Germany. Issued on 26 April 1940, this early-war example includes the original front cover and inner pages through the soldier’s personal description and unit assignments. Sammet served in the Luftwaffe as an enlisted Flieger (airman), with his military service recorded in Luftwaffe-Bau-Bataillon 91/VII—a Luftwaffe construction battalion responsible for key logistical tasks such as airfield maintenance, fortification building, and support infrastructure. His identification tag (“Erkennungsmarke”) number 43 from L.B.Batl. 91/VII is clearly listed, as is his home address in Binswangen, a small Bavarian town, and his physical description, including a height of 1.75 meters, brown eyes, blond hair, and shoe size 41. Notably, the Soldbuch was issued by the unit’s company commander, whose signature and unit stamp remain intact and legible. While this piece is incomplete, it retains the soldier’s photograph, original staples, and both grommets—showing signs of extensive wear from actual field use. These surviving first pages provide a rare glimpse into the life and role of a Luftwaffe support soldier early in the war. Items like this, even fragmentary, are valuable research tools that bring human detail to the vast machinery of the Wehrmacht. Ideal for collectors focused on Luftwaffe personnel, early-war documentation, or wartime construction units within the German armed forces.
