Description
This is an original World War II German Kriegsmarine (Navy) enlisted man’s and NCO’s breast eagle, finely machine-embroidered in golden-yellow thread on a black wool backing. The emblem depicts the German national eagle with outstretched wings clutching a wreathed swastika, executed with tight, high-quality stitching that reflects the precision of wartime German uniform production. The reverse shows the black cloth backing typical of period manufacture, with remnants of adhesive from previous mounting. The Kriegsmarine adopted this pattern of breast eagle in 1935, following the standardization of national emblems across all Wehrmacht branches. While the overall eagle-and-swastika design remained consistent, the Navy used a distinctive golden-yellow thread on a black base to differentiate its personnel from the grey-on-green of the Heer and the silver-grey-on-blue of the Luftwaffe. These eagles were worn on the right breast of the service tunic, tropical uniforms, and later in the war, field blouses for shore-based units. Machine-embroidered examples such as this were standard issue for most enlisted ranks and NCOs, offering a neat appearance while being faster to produce than hand-embroidered officer versions. The Kriegsmarine, established from the Reichsmarine in 1935, was tasked with Germany’s naval warfare operations during WW2. At its height, it encompassed U-boat forces, surface fleets, coastal defense units, naval infantry, and auxiliary support services. While its surface fleet was never able to match the Royal Navy in size or reach, the Kriegsmarine’s U-boat arm became one of Germany’s most formidable weapons, threatening Allied shipping lanes in the Battle of the Atlantic. Its operations extended from the frigid Arctic waters to the Mediterranean and as far as the Indian Ocean, with naval personnel also serving in occupied ports and coastal defenses throughout Europe. This breast eagle is not only a distinctive uniform component but also a tangible link to the sailors and coastal troops who served in Germany’s maritime forces—whether aboard U-boats prowling the North Atlantic, manning coastal batteries along Fortress Europe, or serving aboard the Kriegsmarine’s battleships, cruisers, and destroyers. It represents both the standardized symbolism of the Third Reich military and the specific traditions of the German Navy during one of history’s most significant naval conflicts.
