This original World War II-era BeVo-woven breast eagle was worn by personnel of the German Kriegsmarine’s Coastal Artillery (Marineartillerie), the specialized branch responsible for defending the Third Reich’s extensive coastline, naval bases, and harbor installations. Rendered in green rayon with a finely woven golden-yellow eagle clutching a swastika, this version was worn on the field-grey or green uniform tunic, and is distinct from the navy blue eagles used by shipboard Kriegsmarine personnel. This particular example is textbook, featuring the typical tight machine-woven detail associated with BeVo production in Wuppertal.
The Marineartillerie evolved from earlier Imperial German coastal defense units, but in the Second World War it was significantly expanded to meet the demands of a war that spanned from the Arctic to the Mediterranean. Kriegsmarine Coastal Artillery units manned heavy shore batteries, flak positions, and radar stations. These units were deployed along the Atlantic Wall in France, the Baltic coast in occupied territories such as Norway, Denmark, and the Netherlands, and around German naval bases like Kiel, Wilhelmshaven, and Gotenhafen (Gdynia).
While not typically involved in offensive operations, Coastal Artillery units played a vital defensive role during Allied bombing campaigns and naval raids. Some batteries, like those near Cherbourg or Calais, engaged Allied naval forces during the Normandy invasion. Others supported German operations in the Baltic, such as the defense of East Prussia and the evacuation of refugees during Operation Hannibal.
BeVo eagles like this one were machine-woven and then factory or tailor-applied to the uniform breast. Their lightweight, flat construction made them ideal for tunic use, especially in field conditions. Surviving examples in good condition are increasingly scarce, and they remain a highly collectible artifact from Germany’s naval forces.
This example is uncut and in excellent condition, showing no fraying and strong definition—an outstanding addition to any WWII German or Kriegsmarine insignia collection.
