Description
The WWII German Luftschutz Beaded M40 Helmet, marked Q64 with a size 58 liner, is a distinct variant of German civil defense headgear designed for the Luftschutz—the Reich’s air raid protection service. Introduced in the early 1940s, this helmet type was based on the standard M40 Stahlhelm shell, but modified with a characteristic beaded ridgestamped around the crown. This bead served as a visual and structural distinction to clearly separate these lighter-duty civilian helmets from their military counterparts. Manufactured by Quist of Esslingen, one of the major wartime helmet producers, the “Q64” marking indicates both the maker and the shell size. The 58 cm liner is secured inside using the three-rivet system common to the M40 design, and includes the correct Luftschutz leather liner with drawstring adjustment. These helmets were often painted a slate or dark blue finish and commonly bore the Luftschutz decal on the front: a stylized silver winged swastika over a laurel wreath, with the word “Luftschutz” prominently displayed. This model was issued to civilian air raid wardens, emergency personnel, and auxiliary workers responsible for enforcing blackout conditions, assisting during bombings, and conducting search-and-rescue efforts in cities targeted by Allied strategic bombing. Though not intended for front-line use, these helmets saw extensive service during devastating air raids over urban centers like Hamburg, Dresden, and Berlin. The beaded M40 represents a unique intersection of military-grade design and civilian adaptation—an artifact of the total mobilization of German society under the Nazi regime. With its maker-marked shell and intact liner, this example is a well-preserved testament to the widespread and often overlooked role of civil defense in the homefront experience of WWII Germany.
