Description
This 1936-dated 5 Reichsmark silver coin was issued by the Third Reich to commemorate the late Field Marshal and President of Germany, Paul von Hindenburg (1847–1934), one of the most pivotal and controversial figures in Germany’s interwar period. Struck at the Berlin State Mint, designated by the "A" mintmark, the coin embodies the turbulent transformation of Germany during the 1930s—straddling the line between Weimar republican memory and National Socialist consolidation. The obverse of the coin features a finely detailed right-facing profile bust of Hindenburg, accompanied by the inscription “Paul von Hindenburg” and his lifespan “1847–1934.” Hindenburg served as the Supreme Commander of German forces during World War I and later as President of the Weimar Republic. His reluctant decision in 1933 to appoint Adolf Hitler as Chancellor paved the way for the Nazi dictatorship. Following his death in August 1934, Hitler merged the presidency with the chancellorship, assuming total control of the German state. The reverse displays the imperial German eagle—Reichsadler—a heraldic symbol historically associated with German statehood since the Holy Roman Empire. In contrast to later Nazi coinage, this coin does not feature a swastika, making it an early transitional issue between Weimar-era aesthetics and the fully realized iconography of the Third Reich. The text “Deutsches Reich” (German Empire) arches above the eagle, while “5 Reichsmark” appears below, denoting its denomination. The two digits of the year, “19” and “36”, flank the eagle, with the mintmark "A" confirming its origin at Berlin’s mint. This coin is struck in 0.900 fine silver (90% silver, 10% copper) and weighs 13.88 grams, with a diameter of 29 millimeters. Its milled edge reads “Gemeinnutz geht vor Eigennutz” ("The common good comes before self-interest"), a key ideological slogan of National Socialism—embedding party rhetoric directly into the fabric of the nation's currency. Though issued under Nazi rule, this variant remains notable for its absence of overt Nazi symbols. It reflects a brief period in which the regime selectively merged existing national symbols with its own, as part of a calculated process of legitimacy-building. Collectors often seek this particular type as a pre-full-symbolic transition issue, representing both historical nuance and material continuity from the late Weimar period into the early Third Reich.
