The Romanian Crusade Against Communism Medal was instituted on April 1, 1942, by the Kingdom of Romania under the rule of King Michael I. This medal was awarded to Romanian and Axis military personnel who participated in Operation Barbarossa, the Axis invasion of the Soviet Union, and subsequent campaigns against the Red Army on the Eastern Front. It symbolized Romania’s commitment to the fight against communism and their alliance with Nazi Germany during World War II.
The obverse of the medal displays a clenched fist gripping a sword, with the inscription “CRUCIADA ÎMPOTRIVA COMUNISMULUI” (Crusade Against Communism) encircling the design, along with the years “1941–1942.” The reverse features an image of a female figure symbolizing Romania, surrounded by the inscription “ROMANIA RECUNOSCATOARE” (Grateful Romania). The red ribbon with central blue, yellow, and red stripes represents the national colors of Romania and signifies valor and sacrifice in combat.
This medal was not only awarded to Romanian soldiers but also to German and other Axis allies who fought alongside Romanian troops on the Eastern Front, making it a significant cross-national military decoration. It serves as a historical artifact that reflects the complex alliances and ideologies of the Axis powers during World War II.
This piece is preserved with its original ribbon and remains an important collectible for military historians and enthusiasts alike.
