Description
WW2 German Eastern Front Medal "Ostmedaille" (Winter Battle in the East 1941/42) – Maker Marked "6" Fritz Zimmerman, Stuttgart The Eastern Front Medal (Ostmedaille), officially known as the "Winterschlacht im Osten 1941/42", was instituted on May 26, 1942, to recognize the hardships and sacrifices of German and Axis personnel who endured the brutal winter campaign on the Eastern Front. Commonly referred to as the "Frozen Meat Medal" by soldiers due to the extreme conditions it symbolized, this award was given to those who served in the bitter cold of the Soviet Union between November 15, 1941, and April 15, 1942. The medal is constructed of a zinc alloy with a darkened finish, featuring an eagle clutching a swastika on the obverse, symbolizing German power. Below the eagle, crossed swords and a laurel branch represent the struggle and sacrifices of the campaign. The reverse is inscribed "Winterschlacht im Osten 1941/42", with a crossed sword and branch, reinforcing the medal's significance in commemorating the brutal winter battles. The ribbon, which remains attached, is red with black and white edges—meant to symbolize the bloodshed, harsh winter, and the Wehrmacht. This particular piece is maker-marked "6", attributing its manufacture to Fritz Zimmerman of Stuttgart, a known producer of Third Reich awards. The marking is stamped on the medal's ring, confirming its authenticity and origin. Awarded to soldiers, Luftwaffe personnel, Kriegsmarine members, and Axis allies, the criteria for receiving this decoration included serving for 14 days in active combat, enduring 60 days in severe winter conditions, or being wounded or killed in action on the Eastern Front. As a campaign medal, it was worn on the left breast or as a ribbon on the uniform tunic. In 1957, the Ostmedaille was reissued in a de-Nazified form for continued wear by veterans of the Bundeswehr. This is an authentic, period-awarded example of a historically significant decoration, bearing the hallmarks of a brutal and unforgiving front that tested the limits of every soldier who fought in the harsh Soviet winter.
