The “Italo-German Campaign Medal in Africa” medal was instituted by the Italian Government during the Second World War to reward the achievements of the “Afrikakorps”. The medal was awarded only to German troops, with the first awards made in early 1942 and the last awards being given in early 1944. These were stopped after Italy surrendered and the award was withdrawn on the March 29, 1944, along with other Italian awards. The German high command made specific mention is made of the Italo-German Campaign Medal.
Physically, The medals obverse shows two knights-representing Italy and Germany. They are shown wrestling a crocodile, which represents England. The the reverse of the medal is centered by the Italian Feleni Arch flanked on either side by a fasces and then a swastika. To the base is the royal knot of the house of savoy.
This medal shows clear signs of use, wear and age. This piece definitely has great character and a story to tell.
