WW2 Imperial Japanese Army Kyushu Depot Reservist Commemorative Sake Cup

This original Imperial Japanese Army porcelain sake cup dates from the Second World War and was issued to commemorate a soldier’s military service with the Kyushu-based Army supply or reserve depot. The interior features a detailed hand-painted design showing a helmet and rifle resting against a standing Japanese flag (日章旗), surrounded by pink cherry blossoms, gold floral elements, and a white silk infantry flag. The vivid blue rim framing the scene is a classic stylistic touch found on higher-quality commemorative cups of the era.

The kanji inside the cup reads:
「予備 備隊」(“Yobi Bitai” – Reserve Unit)
This marking suggests the cup was awarded to a reservist (予備兵) affiliated with a logistics or depot unit on Kyushu Island, likely commemorating either induction or discharge from active duty service.

The underside bears the maker’s mark in red kanji:
「九分」(“Kubu” or possibly 九谷 – “Kutani,” if abbreviated), referring either to a kiln name or a workshop location, possibly from the Kutani region known for producing decorative military ware during the 1930s and 1940s.

These presentation cups were typically given by commanding officers, family, or local community members to honor service members returning home or completing reserve duty. They served not only as keepsakes but also as symbols of pride in national service and connection to Japan’s expanding military apparatus during the Showa era.
