Description
This original World War II-era Imperial Japanese Army artillery commemorative sake cup is a poignant example of the personalized gifts presented to Japanese soldiers upon their departure for military service. These porcelain cups were often commissioned by fellow soldiers, village elders, or family members to honor a serviceman’s enlistment or departure for the front lines. This particular cup was awarded to a soldier attached to an artillery unit—a branch of the Imperial Japanese Army that played a pivotal role in the campaigns across China and the Pacific. The interior features a delicately hand-painted design with a central motif of a Japanese Rising Sun flag—symbolizing national duty and sacrifice—paired with a gold Imperial star and an artillery shell, surrounded by gilded cherry blossoms, the latter being an enduring symbol of loyalty, ephemeral life, and warrior spirit in Japanese martial tradition. Beneath the design is a dedication in kanji, which reads: 「遠征出征之記念」(“Expedition Departure Commemoration”) and 「第X聯隊」(“[Number] Regiment”), indicating this cup was made for a soldier departing with an unidentified numbered artillery regiment. The cup’s exterior is a subtle pink-lavender glaze, and the base features a stylized six-lobed foot ring, with additional brushwork kanji possibly denoting the soldier's surname or the kiln mark. The rim is hand-gilded and shows light wear consistent with age. These sake cups were not mass-produced tourist items but personalized tokens of service, commonly brought home—or sent home—by soldiers and their families. As such, they offer insight into the private, emotional world of Japan’s wartime servicemen. The Imperial Japanese artillery branch was heavily engaged in both conventional siege operations in China during the Second Sino-Japanese War and in defensive campaigns across island garrisons during WW2. Japanese gunners faced brutal conditions, especially in campaigns like Guadalcanal, the Philippines, and Okinawa, where ammunition shortages and jungle terrain complicated operations. Cups like this are rare survivals of those personal journeys—both commemorative and spiritual. An evocative and tangible link to the daily lives of Japan’s wartime soldiers.
