Description
This original Imperial Japanese Army porcelain sake cup is a striking example of wartime commemorative craftsmanship, presented to an officer of company-level command rank. The interior is elegantly hand-painted in gold and iron-red pigments, featuring the iconic Kyokujitsu-ki (Rising Sun flag) with radiating golden rays—symbolizing the Japanese Empire and its military might. Above the flag is a gold five-pointed star, emblematic of the Imperial Japanese Army (Dai-Nippon Rikugun) and worn by officers on their caps. The gold kanji inscription reads 貴隊長 (Ki Taichō), which translates to “Honorable Company Commander.” This honorific phrasing reflects the Japanese military tradition of gifting such cups to officers upon assuming command, completing training, or prior to deployment. Sake cups like this served not only as ceremonial tokens but as deeply personal keepsakes, often presented by junior officers or soldiers to their superiors in acts of loyalty, respect, and cohesion. Porcelain presentation cups became increasingly common during the late Meiji period and remained a staple of military culture throughout the Taishō (1912–1926) and early Shōwa (1926–1989) eras. These cups were popular during Japan’s campaigns in China and the Pacific, especially during the Second Sino-Japanese War (1937–1945) and the early years of World War II. The Rising Sun flag, officially adopted as the war flag of the Imperial Army in 1870, came to embody Japan’s military spirit and expansionist ideology. Its presence on the cup indicates the recipient was part of a combat unit. The use of gold paint, often reserved for officer presentations, suggests a commissioned rank—likely a lieutenant or captain—receiving this as a gesture from enlisted men or a fellow officer. This artifact offers both aesthetic appeal and rich historical significance, embodying the ceremonial traditions, hierarchical values, and militarist ethos of the Imperial Japanese Army in the early 20th century. It stands as a poignant and personal reminder of the individuals behind the machinery of empire and war.
