This is an original 1940-dated Japanese 2600th National Anniversary Commemorative Medal, issued to mark the 2,600th year since the founding of Japan by Emperor Jimmu, the legendary first emperor of Japan. Known in Japanese as the “Kigen 2600 Nen Kinen Shō” (紀元二千六百年記念章), this medal was awarded to both military personnel and civilians in recognition of their participation in the empire-wide celebrations during a period of heightened nationalism and imperial expansion.

Struck in bronze with a silvered finish, the medal features a radiant sunburst rising behind the Imperial Palace’s Hōō-den (Phoenix Hall), symbolizing the mythical origins of the Japanese Empire. The reverse bears the chrysanthemum crest flanked by sacred sakaki branches, along with the kanji inscription commemorating the 2600th year. It is suspended from a traditional yellow and red rising sun motif ribbon and comes with its original hook and eye attachment.
