b – Early 1920s “Black and Tan Medal”
Description: This is an original Truce Commemoration Medal (An Bonn Comórtha na Saoirse), awarded to veterans of the Irish War of Independence. Issued in the early 1920s, this prestigious medal was presented to members of the Irish Republican Army (IRA) and other Irish volunteers who played a pivotal role in the fight against British rule, ultimately leading to the signing of the Anglo-Irish Treaty and the establishment of the Irish Free State.
The front of the medal features Hibernia, the national personification of Ireland, placing a laurel crown on the head of a kneeling Irish Volunteer. This powerful image symbolizes Ireland’s gratitude for the bravery and sacrifice of those who fought for its freedom. The inscription “A Dómh Soláoise” translates to “To the Soldier of Liberty,” further emphasizing the medal’s significance.
The reverse side of the medal typically bears the inscription “The Service Medal.” The medal is suspended from a blue ribbon with a clasp inscribed with “Seirbhis,” the Irish word for “Service,” recognizing the crucial role these individuals played in Ireland’s path to independence.
This medal is also commonly known as the “Black and Tan Medal.” The nickname originates from the Black and Tans, a notorious British paramilitary force deployed to Ireland during the War of Independence. Veterans who fought against the Black and Tans and were awarded this medal often referred to it by this name, adding a layer of historical context and significance to the piece.
This Truce Commemoration Medal is not just a collectible; it is a tangible piece of Irish history, representing the courage and determination of those who fought for Ireland’s freedom. Highly sought after by collectors and historians, this medal is a must-have for anyone interested in Irish military history.
