This is an outstanding example of the iconic WW1 German Fernglas 08 field binoculars, complete with their original fiberboard case and the factory-issued instruction label still affixed to the inside lid. These 8x power binoculars were widely used by German officers and artillery spotters throughout the First World War and were prized for their rugged construction and optical clarity. The central focus knob is marked “Fernglas 08” along with serial number 823163 and the maker code “Rodolphe Soloturn,” indicating manufacture by a Swiss optics firm contracted by the German military.

The binoculars retain much of their original textured black finish, and both eye-cups remain intact. The optics show moderate internal clouding but remain functional for display or historical interpretation. The included case is in very good condition with all hardware present, though the leather belt strap has deteriorated, as shown. Remarkably, the printed paper Gebrauchsanweisung (instruction label) remains clean and legible—a rare and desirable feature, often missing from surviving examples.

Issued from 1908 onward, the Fernglas 08 was based on pre-war civilian models and adapted for field service. These binoculars were standard equipment in the trenches, at observation posts, and with Sturmtruppen units. Their wide field of view and durable casing made them a preferred tool for German frontline officers and artillery observers alike. This particular example shows signs of honest field use and would make an excellent addition to any WW1 collection.
