WW1 Imperial German Heer NCO Sword – Solingen Maker’s Mark
This is a genuine WW1-era Imperial German Heer (Army) Non-Commissioned Officer’s sword, manufactured by a renowned Solingen blade maker, as evidenced by the visible maker’s mark on the ricasso. This model was a standard sidearm carried by NCOs in the Imperial German Army during the First World War, symbolizing authority and rank.
The sword features a brass hilt with a characteristic lion’s head pommel, a motif commonly associated with German military swords of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The grip is adorned with a molded checkered pattern for improved handling, secured with a wrapped brass wire that remains intact. The guard showcases a sweeping design, adding both functionality and a touch of elegance.
The slightly curved, single-edged blade measures approximately 33 inches and retains its original finish, with wear and patina consistent with its age and field use. Paired with its original steel scabbard, the sword shows signs of honest wear, including small dings and scratches, reflecting its wartime history.
During the First World War, swords like this were worn by NCOs both as a badge of rank and a functional weapon, particularly in ceremonial contexts. The Solingen region, famed for its superior blade-making craftsmanship, was a key supplier of swords for the Imperial German Army, ensuring high quality and durability.
This sword is an excellent piece for collectors focusing on Imperial German militaria, offering a tangible connection to the military traditions and history of the German Empire during the Great War. Its historical significance and craftsmanship make it a valuable addition to any collection.
