WW1 German M1884/98, Second Model, (Removed Sawback) Bayonet

Description

This WW1 German M1884/98 Second Model Bayonet, featuring a removed sawback, represents a significant piece of military history from the First World War. The M1884/98 bayonet was originally designed for use with the Mauser Gewehr 98 rifle, the standard-issue firearm for German forces during the conflict. Early models featured a sawback spine, intended for engineering tasks like cutting wood or barbed wire, but these sawbacks were later removed from many examples due to their controversial reputation in combat. Soldiers wielding sawback bayonets were often viewed with disdain by enemy forces, who considered them excessively brutal.

This particular bayonet shows evidence of field modifications, with the sawback teeth carefully ground down, likely to prevent unnecessary hostility toward its bearer. The wooden grips, showing wear and age, are secured with steel rivets, and the pommel retains its locking mechanism for attachment to a rifle. The steel blade exhibits signs of oxidation and patina, consistent with its age and use in field conditions. The accompanying scabbard, constructed of steel, also shows signs of use and wear, with a darkened patina adding to its authentic character.

Bayonets like this one were not only tools of war but also served as multi-purpose field implements. This example stands as a testament to the practical and sometimes brutal realities of trench warfare. Collectors value pieces like this for their historical significance and the stories they tell about the soldiers who once carried them. This M1884/98 Second Model Bayonet remains a striking relic from one of the most pivotal conflicts in modern history.
