Description

WW1 German Hindenburg Cross with Swords Parade Mounted Medal – Maker Marked (O&B) Ochs & Bonn, Hanau

This original WW1 German Hindenburg Cross with Swords is parade mounted and maker marked by Ochs & Bonn, Hanau (O&B) on the reverse. Officially designated as the Ehrenkreuz des Weltkriegs 1914–1918, this medal was instituted on July 13, 1934, by Reichspräsident Paul von Hindenburg to honor the service of Imperial German combat veterans who fought in World War I.

Historical Context:
Following Germany’s defeat in WW1, there was no official state-issued campaign medal for its veterans. To address this, the Hindenburg Cross was introduced as the first officially recognized military decoration of the Third Reich, intended to acknowledge the sacrifices of German soldiers who served in combat. The version featuring crossed swords, like this one, was awarded exclusively to those who engaged in frontline combat, differentiating it from the non-combatant version.

This parade-mounted example is fitted with a backing plate behind the ribbon, allowing for a formal and durable display on a uniform. The accompanying black, white, and red-striped ribbon represents the colors of the Imperial German flag, reinforcing the connection to the Kaiser’s army.

The O&B (Ochs & Bonn, Hanau) maker’s mark on the reverse confirms the authenticity of this piece, as Ochs & Bonn was a known and authorized manufacturer of German military decorations during this period.

A historically significant and collectible piece, this WW1 German Hindenburg Cross with Swords Parade Mounted Medal is an excellent addition for collectors of Imperial German and Third Reich-era militaria, WW1 veteran awards, and German medal manufacturing history.
