This is a striking and fully intact Imperial German two-place medal bar, awarded to a veteran who served in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870–1871 and later received the Kaiser Wilhelm I Centenary Medal in 1897. The medals are mounted on their original ribbons with a traditional Imperial German red wool backing and correct horizontal pin-back hardware. The condition of both medals, along with their authentic period mounting, reflects an honest and well-preserved example of a 19th-century veteran’s display set.

The first medal in the bar is the bronze Franco-Prussian War Commemorative Medal, awarded to all members of the German military who took part in the campaign against France between 1870 and 1871. The obverse shows a radiant Iron Cross behind a laurel wreath encircling the dates “1870 1871,” while the reverse bears the crowned cipher of Kaiser Wilhelm I with the inscription “Gott war mit uns, Ihm sei die Ehre” and “Dem siegreichen Heere,” translated as “God was with us, to Him be the glory” and “To the victorious army.” This particular example does not include the rim text “Aus Erobertem Geschütz,” marking it as a later war or postwar bronze issue, still awarded to legitimate veterans but not cast from captured French artillery.

The second medal is the Kaiser Wilhelm I Centenary Medal, issued in 1897 to commemorate the 100th birthday of the German Empire’s founding monarch. The obverse features a bold portrait of Wilhelm I in spiked helmet and uniform, with the inscriptions “Wilhelm der Grosse Deutscher Kaiser” and “Koenig von Preussen.” The reverse reads “Zum Andenken an den hundertsten Geburtstag des grossen Kaisers Wilhelm I, 1797–22 März–1897,” meaning “In commemoration of the hundredth birthday of the great Kaiser Wilhelm I.” The reverse design includes oak leaves and imperial regalia, symbolizing unity, victory, and monarchy. The gold-washed finish remains vibrant, contrasting beautifully with the bronze war medal alongside it.
