This is an original example of the Bulgarian Cross of Bravery (Орден за Храброст), established in 1879 by Prince Alexander I of Battenberg. It is the first and oldest military decoration of the modern Bulgarian state, awarded for acts of personal valor and gallantry on the battlefield. This example is a Type I issue, associated with the early years of Bulgaria’s independence from Ottoman rule following the Russo-Turkish War (1877–1878), during which the Principality of Bulgaria was established under nominal Ottoman suzerainty but with autonomy.

The Cross of Bravery was awarded in four classes, with this version being among the earliest post-liberation issues. It features a red enameled cross pattée with white borders, with the Bulgarian crowned lion at center and the inscription “За Храброст” (“For Bravery”). The reverse typically bears the monogram of Prince Alexander I, the nation’s first modern ruler. These early medals were often made in Russia or Austria and reflect the strong influence of Russian military traditions on the Bulgarian army at the time.

This medal would have been awarded to Bulgarian officers and soldiers who demonstrated courage in combat, especially during border conflicts or internal revolts in the late 19th century, such as the Serbo-Bulgarian War of 1885. Due to its historical importance and the relatively small number awarded during the Prince Alexander period, early issues of the Cross of Bravery are highly sought after by collectors of Balkan and Eastern European military orders.
