Civil War Buttons Recovered from the Battle of Fredericksburg

Description:
This lot features two Civil War-era buttons, recovered from the historic battlefield of Fredericksburg, Virginia. These relic buttons, each showing signs of their long-term exposure to the elements, provide a glimpse into the uniforms worn by soldiers during the American Civil War.

  • Brass Button: A heavily oxidized brass button, possibly from a military uniform. The button’s reverse features faint but discernible lettering, which may indicate the maker or origin. This type of button would have been standard on many military uniforms of the era.
  • Bone Button: This smaller, four-hole bone button is well-preserved, reflecting its likely use on undergarments or lighter clothing worn by soldiers.

Both buttons reflect the typical clothing fasteners used during the Civil War period and are direct reminders of the harsh conditions endured by soldiers.

Historical Context:
The Battle of Fredericksburg, fought from December 11–15, 1862, was one of the most lopsided battles of the Civil War. Union forces under General Ambrose Burnside attempted to breach the heavily fortified Confederate positions along Marye’s Heights, resulting in significant Union casualties. Artifacts recovered from the battlefield, such as these buttons, provide invaluable insight into the everyday life of soldiers during this brutal conflict.

Buttons like these would have been found on the uniforms of both Union and Confederate soldiers. The brass button likely came from a jacket or coat, while the bone button could have been part of the soldier’s shirt or underclothing. These items serve as tangible reminders of the soldiers who once wore these uniforms as they faced one of the most tragic battles of the war.

These buttons are perfect for collectors of Civil War memorabilia or those interested in the material culture of soldiers from the 19th century. Each relic carries the weight of history, making them unique additions to any collection.
