Civil War Side Lock Screw from U.S. .58 Musket – Recovered from the Battle of Fredericksburg

This is an original side lock screw from a U.S. .58 caliber musket, recovered from the battlefield of Fredericksburg, Virginia. The side lock screw was a critical component in securing the lock mechanism of the musket, a staple weapon for Union forces during the American Civil War. This particular screw shows significant wear and rust, but its form and purpose remain intact, offering a direct connection to the combat equipment used by soldiers at the time.

Dimensions:

  • Length: Approximately 1.5 inches
  • Condition: Rusted but intact.

Historical Context:
The .58 caliber rifled musket, such as the Springfield Model 1861, was one of the most commonly issued weapons to Union infantry during the Civil War. The accuracy and range of the rifled musket, paired with the Minié ball, made it a devastating tool on the battlefield. Components like this side lock screw were essential for keeping the musket’s firing mechanism operational.

This relic was recovered from the site of the Battle of Fredericksburg, fought between December 11–15, 1862. The Union army, under General Ambrose Burnside, faced fierce resistance from Confederate forces entrenched along Marye’s Heights. The battle resulted in a crushing defeat for the Union, but relics like this musket part serve as enduring reminders of the soldiers who fought there.
