Description

This is an original Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) Souvenir Medal, a commemorative piece from a veteran’s reunion or encampment, produced by Whitehead & Hoag Co. of Newark, NJ, a well-known maker of badges, medals, and ribbons from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The GAR was founded in 1866 as a fraternal organization for Union Army veterans of the American Civil War (1861-1865) and became one of the most politically influential veterans’ groups in U.S. history. The organization was responsible for establishing Memorial Day, advocating for veterans’ pensions, and fostering national unity following the war.

The medal consists of a gold-tone decorative pin bar, securing a cream-colored ribbon with “G.A.R. SOUVENIR” printed in gold lettering. Below the text is the insignia “HUA H”, likely denoting a specific GAR post or event. Suspended from the ribbon is a celluloid medallion, a material commonly used in GAR memorabilia due to its durability and ability to display detailed imagery.

One side of the medallion features the GAR membership badge, which includes an American eagle perched atop a U.S. flag and a five-pointed star, symbolizing the loyalty, fraternity, and charity that the organization promoted. Below the badge, the “Whitehead & Hoag” maker’s mark is printed, confirming its authenticity as a period piece. The reverse side of the medallion is especially symbolic, showing a Union and Confederate veteran shaking hands, an enduring representation of reunion and reconciliation between North and South.

During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, GAR encampments served as major national events, drawing thousands of Civil War veterans to reminisce, honor their fallen comrades, and participate in parades and ceremonies. These gatherings were held across the country, and medals like this were distributed as souvenirs, reinforcing the GAR’s mission of national healing and remembrance. As the Civil War veteran population dwindled, the GAR’s influence waned, and the organization formally disbanded in 1956 following the death of its last member.

This medal is a tangible piece of Civil War history, reflecting the lasting legacy of Union veterans and the efforts to mend the wounds of a divided nation. It remains a highly collectible artifact for those interested in Civil War memorabilia, GAR history, and early American veteran organizations.
