Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) 31st Annual Encampment Ribbon – New York, 1897

This is an original 31st Annual Encampment ribbon for the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR), held in Buffalo, New York, on August 23, 1897. This piece of Civil War veteran memorabilia is a stunning example of the pride and camaraderie that GAR members maintained long after the war. The badge was manufactured by the renowned Whitehead & Hoag Co. of Newark, N.J., as indicated on the reverse side of the ribbon, a company well-known for producing medals and badges of high quality during this period.

Badge Design: The ribbon is adorned with an intricate top bar in the shape of a buffalo, a nod to the encampment’s location in Buffalo, New York. The badge features a central round medallion with a detailed illustration of the GAR membership badge, including a five-pointed star, an American flag, and a Union eagle, reflecting the organization’s deep connection to Union Army veterans. The words “PAT. W. & H. CO., NEWARK, N.J.” are inscribed on the medallion, signifying the craftsmanship of Whitehead & Hoag Co., which produced numerous GAR and fraternal order memorabilia during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

The ribbon itself is made of a silk-like material in an off-white color, with blue lettering that reads, “NEW YORK, 31st ANNUAL ENCAMPMENT, G.A.R., BUFFALO, N.Y., AUGUST 23, 1897.” The edges of the ribbon are bordered with gold trim, adding a touch of elegance. Hanging from the ribbon is a decorative tassel made of gold-toned thread, indicative of the elaborate design elements often found in GAR encampment memorabilia. The fringe at the bottom of the ribbon further complements its ornate appearance.

Reverse Side: The reverse of the ribbon includes printed information about the maker, Whitehead & Hoag Co., highlighting the various patents and trademarks associated with their badges and buttons. This detail provides not only authenticity but also a direct link to the production methods and materials of the time.

Historical Context: The GAR was the preeminent fraternal organization for Union veterans of the American Civil War. Their annual encampments were grand events where members would gather to commemorate their service, strengthen bonds, and discuss veteran affairs. The 31st Annual Encampment in Buffalo, N.Y., in 1897, would have been a significant occasion, bringing together veterans and their families for a series of ceremonies, parades, and meetings. Items like this ribbon served not only as a memento of the event but also as a badge of honor for those who had served and supported the Union cause.

Condition: This ribbon has been well-preserved, with the gold accents, the buffalo-shaped top bar, and the medallion still showcasing the craftsmanship of the era. There is minor wear and discoloration on the silk ribbon, typical for an item of this age, adding to its authenticity and charm as a historical artifact.

This GAR encampment ribbon is a poignant reminder of the legacy of Civil War veterans and the organizations that sought to honor their sacrifices. It is an excellent piece for collectors interested in Civil War history, veteran organizations, and 19th-century American memorabilia.
