33rd National Encampment Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) Souvenir Badge – Philadelphia, 1899

This is an original souvenir badge from the 33rd National Encampment of the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR), held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1899. This badge represents a significant moment for Civil War veterans, as the annual encampments were a time of remembrance, camaraderie, and reflection on the sacrifices made during the war. The intricate design and detail of this badge reflect the pride and honor held by the GAR members during these gatherings.

Badge Design: The top bar of the badge is adorned with an eagle clutching a shield inscribed with the year “1899”, symbolizing the GAR’s connection to the Union and the principles for which its members fought. Below the eagle, the top bar reads, “OFFICIAL SOUVENIR – NATIONAL 33rd ENCAMPMENT,” marking this piece as an official commemorative item from the event.

Suspended from the top bar is a large, finely crafted representation of the Liberty Bell, a symbol of American independence and freedom, which holds particular significance given the encampment’s location in Philadelphia. The bell features a detailed engraving of Independence Hall with the dates “SEP. 4-9,” indicating the event’s schedule. The word “PHILADELPHIA” is prominently inscribed along the bottom of the bell. Attached to the center of the bell is a golden GAR membership badge design, featuring the organization’s iconic five-pointed star with the central imagery of Union veterans.

Reverse Side: The reverse of the badge is stamped with the manufacturer’s mark, “Schwaab S. & S. Co., Milwaukee,” identifying the Schwaab Stamp & Seal Company, a prominent maker of badges and medals in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The badge’s pin mechanism is still intact, showcasing the craftsmanship of the era.

Historical Context: The Grand Army of the Republic was the leading fraternal organization for Union veterans of the Civil War, and its national encampments were annual events that drew thousands of members. The 33rd National Encampment in Philadelphia was particularly symbolic, as Philadelphia was a key city in American history and the birthplace of the nation. Souvenir badges like this one were created to commemorate the event, serve as a memento for attendees, and reflect the GAR’s values and pride in the Union’s preservation.

Condition: This badge is in good condition, with the details on both the eagle and the Liberty Bell well preserved. The golden star in the center remains affixed, although there is some natural aging and tarnish, which adds to its historical authenticity. Measuring approximately 3 inches in length, this badge is a notable piece of GAR memorabilia that represents the dedication of Union veterans to their cause and their commitment to remembering the Civil War’s legacy.

This 1899 National Encampment Souvenir Badge is a valuable piece for collectors of Civil War memorabilia, GAR items, and those interested in 19th-century American history.
