Civil War Era Union Navy Model 1852 Officer’s Sword by Horstmann & Sons, Philadelphia

Description:

This is an exceptional Civil War-era Union Navy Model 1852 Officer’s Sword, manufactured by the renowned W.H. Horstmann & Sons of Philadelphia. The Model 1852 was the standard-issue sword for commissioned officers in the Union Navy, known for its elegant design and symbolic engravings. This sword is a fine example of the craftsmanship of the period, bearing the engraved maker’s mark, “Horstmann & Sons, Philadelphia,” on the ricasso.

The blade is beautifully etched with intricate nautical and patriotic motifs, including anchors, fouled ropes, and floral patterns. These designs were meant to reflect the pride and service of Union naval officers during the Civil War. The guard, fashioned from brass, features a richly detailed eagle clutching an anchor—iconic symbols of the Union Navy. The grip is wrapped in high-quality sharkskin and bound with twisted brass wire, showcasing the high standard of officer equipment during the era.

Historical Context:

The Model 1852 Navy Officer’s Sword was introduced just before the American Civil War and quickly became a symbol of rank and authority for Union Navy officers. These swords were carried during key naval operations, including blockades, battles, and amphibious assaults. The Union Navy’s efforts were instrumental in cutting off Confederate supply lines and securing victory in the Civil War.

W.H. Horstmann & Sons was one of the leading manufacturers of military swords and equipment, providing finely crafted weapons to the Union forces. Their swords are highly sought after by collectors for their historical significance and exceptional artistry.

Condition:

This sword remains in very good condition for its age. The blade shows light tarnishing and minor wear consistent with its historical use, while the etched designs are still crisp and highly visible. The brass guard exhibits a rich patina, enhancing its historical character. The sharkskin grip is intact, with minimal wear, and the wire wrapping remains securely in place.

A genuine Civil War artifact, this Model 1852 Navy Officer’s Sword is a significant piece of military history and an outstanding addition to any collection.
