This original Confederate-era One Dollar bill, dated April 19, 1861, was issued by the Corporation of Richmond, Virginia, shortly after the start of the American Civil War. The note features a central seal with intricate details of the city’s coat of arms, flanked by the denomination and various engraved text and signatures. It promises the bearer one dollar, redeemable in Confederate funds. The bill’s green paper has aged, and there are some small tears and creases throughout, typical of currency that has survived over 150 years.
The serial number, handwritten as “9390,” adds to the historical uniqueness of the note, and the signatures of the Chamberlain and other officials are clearly visible despite some wear. The back of the bill is blank, with the paper exhibiting crackling due to its age.
Condition:
- Condition shows signs of wear typical for its age, including slight fraying at the edges and creases.
- The front printing is mostly intact, although some fading has occurred.
- Dimensions: Approx. 7 inches by 3 inches.
Historical Context: Issued just days after the Confederate bombardment of Fort Sumter, which marked the start of the Civil War, this Richmond One Dollar bill provides a window into the early financial struggles of the South. As the war progressed, Confederate currency became increasingly devalued, and bills like this were crucial for financing the Southern war effort. Richmond, the capital of the Confederacy, played a pivotal role in the war, not just politically and militarily, but economically as well. This note represents a rare piece of Civil War history, reflecting both the optimism and eventual hardship faced by the Confederate States of America.
