Description
This is an original WW2-era National Socialist German Workers’ Party (NSDAP) membership badge, manufactured by the Vienna-based firm Friedrich Orth, bearing the RZM code M1/153. Struck in brass and finished with fired vitreous enamel, the badge features the standard 24mm diameter design introduced after 1933, with the black swastika set within a white enamel field, surrounded by a translucent red enamel ring inscribed NATIONAL-SOZIALISTISCHE-D.A.P. in gilt lettering. The reverse is clearly stamped with the circular RZM logo above the maker’s code, with a soldered round-wire pin assembly attached to a circular base plate—an attachment style characteristic of Orth’s mid- to late-1930s production. The NSDAP membership badge was the sole mandatory emblem for party members, issued following acceptance into the party and worn on civilian clothing to signify affiliation. The RZM (Reichszeugmeisterei) standardized design, materials, and manufacturing methods in the mid-1930s, assigning each authorized maker a numerical code; M1/153 was issued to Friedrich Orth, a prominent Austrian insignia manufacturer whose production for the NSDAP increased after the 1938 Anschluss. Orth’s badges are recognizable for their precise lettering, clean gilt borders, and distinctive ruby-red translucent enamel. During the Third Reich period, the membership badge held symbolic and political weight far beyond its size. Its presence on a lapel marked the wearer as part of Hitler’s political movement and, after 1933, as aligned with the ruling party of the German state. The badge served not only as a personal identifier but also as a visible sign of loyalty, required for participation in many party activities. By the outbreak of WW2, millions of these badges had been produced by RZM-licensed firms, yet each maker’s examples show subtle differences in construction and finish, providing collectors and historians with valuable insights into period manufacturing and supply. This Friedrich Orth example remains an authentic and well-preserved specimen of a politically and historically significant insignia of the era.
